The Bamboo bag is still one of Gucci's bestsellers. It was born out of accident and necessity, because leather was in short supply when the world was recovering from war 66 years ago, forcing the crafts people at Gucci to get creative when making
new bags. And so because leather was in short supply, bamboo was readily available from Japan, so they heated it, bent it into a semicircle and attached it as a handle to a neat little pigskin bag.
Gucci's Creative Director, Frida Giannini, decided
to take a luggage lock found in the Gucci Archive and rescale it and use it as the clasp of the Lady Lock bag, my picures show it, the photo to the left shows the Python version.
Celebrities including Liz Taylor and Princess Diana have all
gone for the Bamboo bag and it appeals to many different women. because of this it has not just survived but thrived.
